Current Socioeconomic Profiles

Salmonid recovery planning involves more than stream ecosystems and salmonids. Land uses within a watershed may impact habitat and influence the cost of purchasing land for restoration projects. Additionally, the degree to which local residents "buy in" to a recovery project can be a critical factor for its success or failure. In order to increase the probability of success, coastal managers often take social and economic factors into consideration. In this section, the socioeconomic conditions of San Mateo County and Santa Cruz County in the early 21st Century are presented. The information presented here will quickly become outdated, but it presents a good initial overview of important trends and industries in the study area. By referring to the sources cited in this section, coastal managers can obtain or locate future relevant socioeconomic information.
