Giant Reed Removal and Riparian Habitat
Restoration
in the Russian
River Watershed
Riparian forest corridors are highly
productive ecosystems that provide vital habitat for the endangered
salmonid species. The invasion of exotic non-native species
directly
threatens the functioning of this vital ecosystem. Throughout
California, giant reed (Arundo
donax) is recognized as a highly invasive noxious weed
species that has negative effects on fisheries and wildlife habitat,
water quality and water quantity.
Since
2003 The Center has:
- Successfully removed and restored over
1,500 infested riparian corridor acres in the Russian River Watershed
- Planted over 4,000 native plants, grown
in our on-site Native Plant Nursery

To date, our accomplishments in restoring riparian forests canopy for
the recovery of salmonid in-stream habitat is a significant achievement
within the field of ecosystem restoration.
This important project for salmonid species is supported by the
following public and private agencies:
- California Department of Fish and Game
- California State Coastal Conservancy
- California Wildlife Conservation Board
- California State Water Resources
Control Board
- Sonoma County Water Agency
- Sonoma County Community Foundation
